“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.”
– Flora Lewis (American journalist, 1922-2022)
For the academic year 2023-2024, Vermont State University is now providing education to a total of 729 (out of 5,065 students) (about 14.39%) self-reported as multilingual, using more than one language in their life. 293 multilingual students of them are considered a minority, having a Hispanic ethnicity, or a non-white race. 766 students (15.12% of total student population) are classified as “International Students”- including students from non-English speaking countries and those from Canadian, UK, Australia, and English-speaking countries.
This virtual display was prepared by the VSCS Libraries in conjunction with VTSU Multilingual Students Services to accompany Intercultural Artifacts Exhibitions happening at the campus libraries beginning April 16th (see sidebar). Take a look at the books and videos we highlight below—and stop by the libraries to check out the artifact displays!

Beyond multilingual multicultural education and instructional recommendations for faculty and staff to accommodate the unique requirements and develop the learning abilities of their students, these nine books encompass learning sciences. These up-to-date nine ebooks, which cover everything from practical in-class pedagogical methods to brain-based research to strategies for supporting multilingual multicultural students, are intended to inspire confidence in your advocacy for a more equitable and inclusive learning environment for all. Furthermore, your endorsement of the multilingual multicultural shift in higher education aids in equipping your students with a global perspective, enabling them to interact with diverse communities across the globe and bringing personal and communal profits.
Do you possess any books, literature, paintings, music, poems, and cultural objects in different languages and cultures that represent YOU? Those artifacts possess the power to heal, unite, transform lives, and represent who you are.
This exhibition at the VTSU Libraries will feature items that convey the tales of multilingual, multicultural students, professors, and staff.
You can join the project by lending your cultural items to the librarians on any VTSU campus before April 16. Then, come see and learn more from each other!
