Laxmi Narayan Tripathi is the first transgender rights activist to represent Asia pacific in UN 2008. She is a Hindi film actress and a Bharatnayam dancer based in Mumbai. Also an Ex-Bigg Boss contestant. Laxmi has served NGOs which conduct LGBT activist work. In 2007 she started her own organisation, Astitva which works to promote the welfare of sexual minorities, their support and development.

There are many items of clothing that announce to the world that their wearer is now a woman. For some people, it's the bra, for others, it's their first shoe with a heel. For many Indian women, that garment is the sari, an expansive length of cloth that takes skill and know-how to wear correctly. Girls learn to execute this multi-step process from their mothers, and "come out" for the first time in their own sari during Ritu Kala Samskara, a ceremony that marks a girl's transition into womanhood.

The latest documentary by Ivan Olita is a piece documenting the far reaches of the southern state of Oaxaca where, in the indigenous communities around the town of Juchitán, the world is not divided simply into males and females. The local Zapotec people have made room for a third category, which they call “muxes” - men who consider themselves women and live in a socially sanctioned limbo between the two genders.

Bakla (Tagalog) — a Filipino person assigned male at birth but may have adopted mannerisms traditionally regarded as feminine. The term includes individuals who identify as trans, non-binary, bisexual, etc. While most bakla are attracted to men, collectively referring to them as "gay" would be inaccurate as some self-identify as women.

We sat down with Elena Heuze and Drama Del Rosario to talk about how queer people are treated by Filipinos.
