The U.S. federal and state governments provide documents and reports to the general public. These documents can contain population data, employment statistics, legislative documents and laws, budgets for government agencies or about spending, and crime statistics.
There are also many historical materials such as photographs, maps, and primary source documents that are kept in national archives and libraries, and are available online.
Many documents are available online on government (.gov) websites. In any Web search engine, enter the word site followed by a colon and gov along with your search terms to limit your results to only government websites (e.g. Vermont mortality rates site:gov).

*Not all state agency or department websites are on a .gov Internet domain (e.g. The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is a .com) but most will link back to a state government homepage which is usually a .gov.

As a selective federal depository library in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), the Willey Library at VTSU Johnson makes U.S. government documents available for public access for free. The public may access materials received under the FDLP during the library's regular hours. Individuals using the materials must abide by the library and university rules.
