Online Collections

Database logosThe online collection consists of a variety of electronic resources, including eBook packages, article and newspaper databases, individual electronic journals and books, reference materials and streaming films. These resources are evaluated each year to determine their cost and value to the core collection.

Due to our varying renewal cycles and multi-year agreements, the database adjustment process began during the 2021-2022 fiscal year and is still in process.

Current Collections

Database Changes

We regulary evaluate our resources to ensure we are providing value to our users. We consider the following data over a 5 year period (if available) when evaluating existing core databases:

  • Number of searches
  • Full Text Views
  • Price Range and Average Inflation
  • Cost per search and/or full-text view, if available

We will also consider new databases for our core collection based on requests from faculty, administrators, staff and students. Criteria for inclusion include:

  • Accessibility and usability: on campus as well as remote, license terms, and ease of use.
  • Content and scope: relative to existing resources and curricular integration.
  • Relevance and currency: timeliness, update frequency and long-term value.
  • Usage and cost: number of courses, course enrollment and overall cost to acquire.

* The VSCS Libraries define "Core Databases” as those that are central/important to serving the most students from undergraduate through graduate school.

Discontinued databases and possible replacements as of June 30th, 2023 unless indicated otherwise.

  • America: History & Life with Full Text – this is an EBSCO database, will check to see if it could be part of the base package. American Memory by the Library of Congress is freely available http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html
  • Anatomy.tv – CCV instructors using Visible Body instead of Anatomy TV. Anatomy 3D Atlas has a free apps with some easily accessible content. https://anatomy3datlas.com/
  • Applied Science & Technology Full Text – EBSCO database: try the Open Access Applied science Journals site for additional links. https://oa.mg/journals/open-access-applied-science-journals

  • Building Green – Low usage. Cancellation approved by Construction Mgt and Architectural Eng departments. Cancellation effective 04/01/2021.
  • Career Transitions Guidance Center – VtSBA wants to work with students, plus there are plenty of online resources. Also try https://www.myfuturevt.org
  • Cochrane Library – might be able to supply Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions in print. Also try https://clinicaltrials.gov/
  • Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source https://www.omicsonline.org/oral-hygiene-and-health.php (link below for master source)
  • DSM Library – The DSM publisher provides free searching of the title on its website. Print copy DSM will be available at main library sites. Also try International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision https://icd.who.int/en
  • EBSCO eBooks: University Press Collection – Academic Collection is available.
  • Environment Complete – the library has GreenFILE Environmental Science Collection
  • Global Issues In Context – many newspapers included in Gale OneFile:News (https://titlelist.gale.com/titlelist/STND/kbart)
  • Global Newsstream – many newspapers included in Gale OneFile:News
  • Health Source: Consumer Edition – Try ScienceDirect, EBSCO Health Source, or ILL
  • IEEE Xplore – could supplement with ebooks.
  • Natural Medicines –Low usage and increasing subscription rates. Cancellation effective 08/31/21.
  • NewsBank – many newspapers included in Gale OneFile:News
  • Nexis Uni – Low usage and increasing subscription rates, poor integration with other library services, poor user interface. Replaced with HeinOnline, open access statutes, and minor journal subscriptions. Cancellation effective 06/30/2021.
  • Nursing Education in Video – no specific replacement for this.
  • Ovid Nursing Journal – may have to rely on Science Direct and ILL.
  • Oxford Music Online (Grove Music) – no specific replacement for this
  • ProQuest Central - ProQuest newspaper collections retained as ProQuest Global Newsstream. Journal coverage through EBSCO databases or via ILL.
  • Regional Business News – will supplement with opensource journals.
  • Salem Press Collection – will supplement with requested electronic or print books upon request.
  • Science – Unusual billing format, declining usage. Cancelled 4/2021, but will monitor request for this title via ILL.
  • ScienceDirect (Elsevier) -- may need to rely on ILL or request electronic books.
  • SocINDEX with Full Text –no specific replacement for this.
  • Very Short Introductions – Low usage and increasing subscription rates. Cancellation effective 03/31/21.
