It’s important to create a research plan before jumping into your research. Once you've come up with a topic, make sure you also understand your purpose, audience, and assignment requirements. Are you writing to persuade or inform? Do your readers need background information? Does your instructor require peer-reviewed articles? Clarifying your goals will guide your research process.
Establish a note-taking system that documents author, content, and page numbers of quotations. Keep track of which ideas belong to you and which come from other sources. Organize the quotations and references you want to use in your paper and build your bibliography or works cited page as you read.
