How To Do Research (New Version for IL Restructuring)

Searching Outside of the Library

There are some types of information that you will want or even need to look outside of the library for. These might include:

  • Current news
  • Information on specific organizations
  • Government policies
  • Popular sources

Search algorithms are biased, with top results influenced by your search history and popular clicks. Companies also invest heavily in SEO to appear at the top, so these results may not be the best or most relevant. Always approach resources critically. See the Evaluating Information section of this guide for assessment strategies.

RESEARCH TIP

The library can help you access open web sources, too.

Use the hamburger menu at the top left of the screen to edit settings in Google Scholar.
