Career Exploration

Have you already graduated but are unsure what to do with your degree, or are you looking to change careers?

We offer two different tools to help you find fulfilling careers:

  • Focus2: With five different self-assessments, holistic career information, and the ability to find potential majors at any colleges, Focus2 is a good starting point for those just starting career exploration or who want to explore all the possibilities. To get started, create a new accountACCESS CODE: ccvcareerservices  Returning users: Log on (using the account you have already created)
  • Career Coach: With work interest assessments and local career data like salaries, projected job openings, job title variations, and employers who frequently post jobs in the field, Career Coach is a good starting point for those who plan to live in Vermont or have a specific career or major in mind. To get started, visit Career Coach. No log in is required.

Career Assessments

Note that these assessments do not tell you what you should do, but rather shows you what careers are most often chosen by people with similar skills, interests, and values to yours. If you don't see anything that appeals to you, don't worry! Talk to Career Services to learn more.

Focus2:

  • Scroll down to the 5 Self Assessments and select one to get started. After each, you’ll find a list of careers that match your assessment.
  • For best results, complete all 5 assessments, then click “Combine Assessments” – this will show you careers chosen by people with similar skills, interests, and values to yours.
  • When you’re done, contact Career Services to chat about the results and discuss potential career paths!

Career Coach:

  • From the Career Coach homepage, click the Take the Assessment button and choose either the very quick 6-question or more detailed 60-question assessment. Once you’ve answered all the questions, you’ll get a “Top Three Traits,” or Holland Code, and a list of matching career family and subfamily. Select one to view a list of matching careers in that job family.
  • By default, the information shown covers a 30-mile radius around Montpelier. Select your closest CCV center and preferred radius to see data local to you.
  • You may choose to save your results to view later by quickly creating an account.

What Can I Do With My Major?

Focus2:

  • Log in and scroll down past the self-assessments.
  • Click on “What can I do with a major in… offered at Community College of Vermont.”
  • Click on the degree that you’re interested in.
  • Click on any of the careers listed to get a very detailed description.

Career Coach:

  • On the Career Coach homepage, use the Browse Programs section. Either search for your program by keyword or click “Browse All Programs” and select your field and program.
  • Click on any of the careers listed to get a very detailed description, including local salaries, job openings, and employers.
  • By default, the information shown covers a 30-mile radius around Montpelier. Select your closest CCV center and preferred radius to see data local to you.

How Can I Learn More About a Specific Career?

Focus2:

  • Log in and scroll down past the self-assessments.
  • Click on "Explore any occupation."
  • Type a keyword into the search box or scroll through the list.
  • Click on any of the careers listed to get a very detailed description, including job tasks, working conditions, education requirements, and earnings.

Career Coach:

  • On the Career Coach homepage, use the Browse Careers section. Type in a career title and search for the closest matches or click “Browse all Careers” and select a job family and subfamily.
  • Click a career title to get a very detailed description, including local salaries, job openings, and employers.
