Career Services Sandbox: Transferable Skills

CCV Career Services

WHAT ARE TRANSFERABLE SKILLS?

Did you know that the skills you develop at unrelated jobs, in college, and even in your daily life are transferable to your dream career?

When thinking about which transferable (or "soft") skills you can use in different jobs, a good place to start is the National Association of Colleges and Employers' 8 Career Readiness competencies - the skills most sought by employers across career fields. These competencies include:

 Career & Self Development

 Communication

 Critical Thinking

 Equity & Inclusion

 Leadership

 Professionalism

 Teamwork

Technology

For more examples of transferable skills and how you might highlight your skills when applying for jobs, read the Indeed article Transferable Skills: 10 Skills That Work Across Industries.

WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED FOR MY FUTURE CAREER?

To learn more about the skills needed to succeed in a particular career, visit Career Coach. Either browse careers or take an assessment to be matched with careers that fit your interests. You'll find a lot of information about each occupation, including local salaries and job openings (be sure to change the region selection to find information most relevant to you!). On each career's About tab, you'll find Soft Skills that are most often included in local job postings. On the Live Job Postings tab, you can see current listings to learn what employers are looking for in candidates right now.

For more help identifying your transferable skills or learning with how to talk about them on a resume or in a job interview, contact Career Services.
