Includes a friendly coffee cup and "you got this"A common college assignment is a research paper.  In addition to writing the paper, you will need to support your work with journal articles, statistics, and reputable sources.

Reread Assignment Requirements

This step is essential.  Take note of:

  • Due date
  • Paper length
  • Grading rubric
  • Types of sources needed

Tools:

  • Rewriting: Try rewriting the assignment requirements in your own words.
  • Calendar: Mark the due date on your calendar and schedule time for each research task.
  • Request time off: If possible/relevant, see if you can take time off from your job or arrange childcare around critical times in your semester.
  • Questions: Do you have any questions for your instructor or a librarian?  Would you like to schedule an appointment with a writing tutor? Don't hesitate to reach out early and build a relationship.  Our job is to support you.

Try This!

Research assignments take time--a lot of it. It often takes 8+ weeks to complete a research paper. Use the University of Minnesota Assignment Calculator to plan and schedule tasks in your personal calendar. A wall calendar may be helpful for budgeting your time and energy.

Where Are We?

We are at step one of the research process: reread the assignment.

  • Block off time in your calendar to complete the assignment.
  • Make sure you understand the requirements, purpose, and audience.
  • Consider reaching out to your support people (instructor, librarians, tutors, and academic advisors). You are on the step 1: reread assignment. The steps are: reread, select topic, background research, refine, search, evaluate & save, and write & cite.
